Food Addiction
If the following behaviors sound like something you experience on a regular basis, it indicates that you have developed food addiction.
- Do you ever eat when you really don’t need to, like when you are depressed or when you have had a bad day?
- Do you eat the same way when you are out in a group as you do when you are alone, or do you find yourself eating much more when you are alone?
- Do you feast on huge portions only to get sick later, or do you expressly take a pill or drug that will help you pass what you ate without completely digesting it first?
- Do you eat food that you know is harmful or not good for you more frequently than not, and do you ever feel guilty after a meal?
If you said yes to more than one of these questions, you might have a food addiction. It is thought that food addiction occurs when a person is trying to regain a sense of control over their life. They feel that they have lost a large amount of control, for whatever reason, so they seek any avenue, even one that is self-destructive, to help regain that sense that they control their own destiny. Some scientists believe that food addiction cravings can actually be caused by food allergies that set off a series of adverse reactions in the body that ends with a person binging on one particular type of food.
