What are the Types of Addiction?

Addiction is a serious issue, and there are a number of types of addictions. In this addiction guide, we will see three types.

Ritalin Addiction

Ritalin is a medicine, but its worst side effect is addiction. It is quite easy to become dependent on the substance. In fact, it is a cousin of methamphetamine, so it makes intuitive sense that the two drugs would have similar rates of addiction. Some addicts do turn to street drugs when they are unable to acquire a supply of prescription drugs. Ritalin is often thought of as a drug prescribed to school children and teens that have problems in school. However, it can also be prescribed for adults who suffer from ADD. It can also pep up those suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, narcolepsy, and it is also used to treat orthostatic tachycardia syndrome that is characterized by low blood volume.

Gambling Addiction

Gambling addiction, more than any other single type of addiction, is the most understandable and the easiest to fall into. Most people like to drink alcohol, but the overwhelming majority of us aren’t alcoholics. We can see that line between drinking casually and problem drinking. With gambling, that line is all but impossible to see. In a capitalist society, our value is often judged by how much money we have. Gambling is, in many people’s eyes, the easiest way to obtain large sums of money without having to do any actual work. That temptation that tantalizing dream of instant wealth is always one pull of the slot machine away or one more hand of poker from happening. Every problem gambler, and most soon-to-be problem gamblers, believe this with every fiber of their being. If they can just refine their betting strategy, get on that one elusive lucky run, or just have enough time to really master a game, they can beat the house, get rich, and live the life they always wanted.

Food Addiction

If the following behaviors sound like something you experience on a regular basis, it indicates that you have developed food addiction.

  • Do you ever eat when you really don’t need to, like when you are depressed or when you have had a bad day?
  • Do you eat the same way when you are out in a group as you do when you are alone, or do you find yourself eating much more when you are alone?
  • Do you feast on huge portions only to get sick later, or do you expressly take a pill or drug that will help you pass what you ate without completely digesting it first?
  • Do you eat food that you know is harmful or not good for you more frequently than not, and do you ever feel guilty after a meal?

If you said yes to more than one of these questions, you might have a food addiction. It is thought that food addiction occurs when a person is trying to regain a sense of control over their life. They feel that they have lost a large amount of control, for whatever reason, so they seek any avenue, even one that is self-destructive, to help regain that sense that they control their own destiny. Some scientists believe that food addiction cravings can actually be caused by food allergies that set off a series of adverse reactions in the body that ends with a person binging on one particular type of food.

In all cases, it is necessary that you seek professional help for addiction treatment.
