The New Pet Health & Wellness Checklist

Pet

When we bring pets into our lives, we want to do everything right for them.  This means the right vet care, proper maintenance, and the attention they need to flourish. But, unfortunately, it can be hard to tell what items are important and which are going too far.

These are some of the most important things every pet owner should provide for their animals!

Current Vaccines

If you have an animal that needs vaccinations, like a dog or a cat, make sure to schedule these and complete them every year.

After your first round, the vet will often remind you via postcard or email when it’s time to make another appointment.  These vaccinations keep our pets healthy and ensure no risk of an avoidable disease or illness hurting them.

Food That Has All the Nutrients Needed

Most pets eat the same food day after day.  Although this is the way we all feed our animals: if you don’t get the right food for them, there’s no room for extra nutrients if they need them.

Ensure that cats get enough fluids in their diet and that you use dog supplements if your canine’s food isn’t giving your pet everything it needs to thrive.

Nails And Fur Maintenance

Nail and fur maintenance is important not only for appearances but also for comfort.  Although cats can maintain a nail length by scratching on cat-designed posts, their sharpened nails can hurt themselves or other animals in the household.  It’s a better idea to trim them once a month to keep them at a comfortable length.  Dogs can’t regulate their nail length, which can lead to health problems, so you must trim their nails as well.

Regular grooming for those animals that need it will help keep them healthy and odor-free, as well as give you a chance to make sure there are no strange lumps or bumps that would be hard to see while they’re dry and their hair is fluffy.

General Health Checks With Your Vet

The average pet should see its veterinarian at least once a year.  This is not only to keep them up to date on their vaccinations but also to give them the chance to discuss any behaviors or health issues that worry you.

Your pet’s veterinarian is an important part of their life, so you must try to get into their office at least once a year.  If you’re worried, you’ll forget something, make notes about what’s concerning you, if anything is.  Otherwise, in emergencies, immediately seek vet help to give your animal the best chance at healing.

The Most Important Thing Your Pet Needs Is Love and Attention

Although you must make sure they’re well taken care of, what most pets need above all else is time and energy spent with them in a way that suits both of you.  If you have a cat, devote some time to playing indoors with them and petting them.

If you have an active dog breed, spend time running with them or getting their energy out.  Match their needs, and your pet will flourish!
