The Necromancer is one of the most popular, balanced, effective, and reliable builds in Path of Exile no matter the league. Thus, it should go without saying that this build archetype will be just as good in Expedition. And among Necromancers, none is as good as the Raise Spectre Necromancer. To know how to build one and spend PoE Currency for it, here’s a short guide.
Mechanics, Pros, and Cons
Why Raise Spectre? Because it is arguably the best Necromancer skill gem, as it creates a spectral version of a mob that you have defeated. Said spectre is going to have the same abilities as its original monster counterpart. Because of this, Raise Spectre is popularly used on mobs that either have unique or powerful abilities. Or sometimes, both.
In this case, the favorite Spectre to be used are those from Slave Drivers, as this particular mob is able to deal much damage. Because of how powerful these mobs are, they eliminate the tedious need for the Necromancer to get other Spectres, making Necromancers’ lives much easier.
The biggest reason to pick it up, however, would be the fact that it has a very high damage output. Done right, it can deal up to 5 million damage, which means bosses are just going to be short work. On top of that, it doesn’t take a lot of Exalted Orb to build up, has considerable movement speed, and it’s relatively safe because since you’ll have an army doing most of the combat. All of these advantages work together into making this a very effective league starter.
Drawbacks and Preparations
Amazingly, its biggest drawback is not related to the build’s shortcoming. Rather, it’s the sheer nature of Necromancer builds not being for everyone because of their rather less hands-on gameplay. If you’re looking for a great build then that shouldn’t be a dealbreaker.
In fact, this particular kind of Summoner is kind of an in-between of the archetypal Summoner build, and a conventional spammy damage-dealing build. That’s because of both Armageddon Brand and the keystone passive Elemental Equilibrium – more on that later on. Unfortunately, if all of those things are still not enough to convince you, then you’re better off completely not trying it out before you even engage in PoE trade for its items.
Other than the usual gear and skill gems, this Necromancer needs a special kind of preparation; otherwise, it wouldn’t be special. As the name suggests, it’s gathering the Slave Driver spectres, which are from the Control Blocks in Act V. Thankfully, even though you can, you don’t have to actively look for a Slave Driver. Instead, you can simply cast Desecrate to Summon Corpses and then use Raise Spectre. Thanks to the changes on your bread-and-butter skill gem, the level of the summoned Spectre no longer depends on the area it was spawned from, but on the level of the skill gem.
Support Gems and Other Skills
With that out of the way, it’s time to bring up the support gems and the Path of Exile build’s other skills. For Raise Spectre, it’s recommended to have four Awakened support gems: Spell Echo, Minion Damage, Controlled Destruction, and Elemental Focus. The first helps make the spell more economical mana-wise, while the rest improves its damage. Last but not least would be Feeding Frenzy, a minion skill gem-specific support gem that makes minions prioritize attacking enemies.
Like what we previously said, Armageddon Brand is going to be the spammed skill. It is, however, not targeted towards enemies. Instead, it’s a self-cast spell that latches onto a nearby enemy. After it does, it randomly activates, summoning a meteor that deals fire damage every time. This isn’t going to be the main way the build deals damage; instead, it simply triggers the Elemental Equilibrium keystone passive ability, allowing you to deal more damage on all elemental sources, including Spectres. To make Armageddon Brand more productive, you might as well throw in Blind and Hextouch support gems, as well as a Curse gem of your choice.
Lastly, since this is a Necromancer builds, it also needs other’s summons. But unlike the Spectres, these ones are going to be our meat shields. For that, there’s the Guardian, Stone Golem, and Raise Zombies. To bolster their defensive potential, have them with either Minion Life or Elemental Army support gems.
With the Raise Spectre Necromancer, you should be able to see why the archetype is effective and popular. So, are you going to build one now or later? We know you’re going to build one; you wouldn’t have read all the way to hear if you aren’t.
