How to Make Summer Fashion Trends Work at the Office

Summer brings with it a bevy of new fashion trends that can be tricky to style, and never is this more evident than when you’re dressing for work. Sheer panels, bright colors, palazzo pants-how can you make these pieces work in a professional environment? Good news: with a few tweaks, most summer trends can easily be woven into your existing office wardrobe. Remember that no matter what you’re wearing, you need to keep your hair and makeup professional.

Bright colors: First, let’s take a look at those bright colors popping up everywhere. Bright flats or heels are an excellent answer to the common office rule barring open-toe summer shoes; just grab some orange or cobalt shoes instead, and you won’t even miss showing off your pedicure. Bright bags, lightweight scarves and bright jewelry also helps bring some color into your office wardrobe, even if the rest of your clothing is fairly demure.

Prints: And what about prints? Large-scale prints are certainly a summer favorite, but they can be overwhelming in the workplace. Small, tone-on-tone or muted prints can feel just as summery but are more suitable than bright, bold hothouse florals; try one on a blazer.

Trends: Now, let’s look at trendy pieces like vintage dresses. The dress you choose should be vintage in style and not really look old. Finish with classic jewelry and a structured handbag.

Sheer tops: Sheer tops are trickier to pull off, and you’ll need a somewhat more relaxed dress code to tackle these. They look great layered over other tops or even under them: try a sheer button-down under a lightweight summer sweater to get a layered look without the bulk (and warmth).

Sporty track separates: Sporty track separates are also big in the summer, but you need to choose carefully (think silk pants instead of mesh) and pair wisely. A cropped pair with flats, a silky blouse and a cashmere cardigan says “business casual” but still feels comfortable after you leave the office.

When the day ends…
Finally, let’s talk about transitioning these outfits at the end of the day for dinner or drinks. When you punch out, all you need to do is swap your sensible shoes for ankle-strap sandals, add a little bright lipstick and do your hair in a messy bun. If you layered up a sheer top for the day, un-layer when you head out. And don’t forget the power of accessories: adding a tribal-print scarf or neon jewelry will transform your office-appropriate separates into an outfit that says “happy hour” in seconds flat.
