If you’re planning on using an ATV, there are a few safety measures you’ll need to follow.

After all, in 2019 alone, there were over 68,000 injuries reported from ATV accidents, with 25,000 of those being children under the age of 16.

But don’t fret, our 8 ATV safety tips will help keep you safe while using your ATV. Get comfortable and keep reading with us!

1. Wear ATV Safety Gear

First and foremost, you should always wear safety gear when riding any type of ATV. This gear includes:

  • Helmets
  • Pads
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Long Sleeves
  • Proper Shoes
  • Etc.

Most ATVs are very easy to flip over, and even the most careful driver can be involved in an accident. This gear can help keep you from being severely injured should you be involved in an accident.

2. No Public Roads

ATVs were not designed to be driven on public roadways. You should only be operating an ATV on a designated trail, or on your own property. This is one of the most important ATV safety tips.

This also helps reduce wear and tear on your machine.

3. Inspect Your ATV

Every time you plan to ride your ATV you should inspect your machine beforehand. Ensure your fluids are adequately filled and all parts and cables are all in working order.

4. One Person Per ATV

There should only be one rider per ATV unless your machine is designed to hold more than one person. This could be very problematic should an accident happen.

5. No Drinking

Just like driving a car, you should not operate an ATV under the influence of any substance. These substances hinder your ability to react to what’s going on around you.

At a .08 BAC level, you are 11 times more likely to crash than a sober driver. This increases as your BAC level increases. It’s much safer to just not take the chance.

6. Buddy System

If your planning to go out and ride trails enlist some friends or family to join you. Should an accident happen, you or your buddies will have someone there to help.

7. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

While riding an ATV be sure to stay aware of your surroundings. Take note of any exposed roots, holes, or bumps that you may encounter. You should also note any sudden weather changes.

This can help you prevent any accidents or potentially dangerous situations.

8. Have Insurance

Many states require you to have insurance on your ATV before riding. This is so that if an accident happens you can get any medical care you may need. ATV insurance can also cover you in case you accidentally damage your ATV or the property you’re riding on.
