A common misconception is that all nurses must go through the same training and practice. There are various types of nurses who need to attend different specialization programs to work in a specific nursing field. Nurses also differ in education levels, which dictate their job descriptions and the roles they can apply for. Visit academicpartnerships.uta.edu/programs/rn-to-msn.aspx to find out more about online MSN programs. Read the following article to get an in-depth analysis of registered nursing, Bachelor and Master of Science in nursing.

What is a Registered Nurse?

A Registered Nurse or an RN treats patients medically and provides emotional support and education to the patients and their families; an RN assists other healthcare providers in maintaining records, administering medication, daily monitoring, and evaluating the patient.

They work in different areas of specialization like neonatology, pediatrics, oncology, geriatrics etc. but may not be limited to it. There are specialized nurses for every specialty of medicine who work within that area. Registered nurses can also work outside hospitals and clinics in environments like outpatient centers, education, rehabilitation centers etc.

What is a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing?

A bachelor’s degree of science in nursing or a BSN is a four-year program for individuals who look forward to becoming registered nurses or already hold registered nurse licensing. This can be an upgrade program for registered nurses to improve from an associate’s degree to a bachelor’s degree.

This program is a standard for entry-level nursing jobs and allows for more nursing occupations than the associate’s degree, especially in hospitals.

RN to BSN Degree Program

RNs require an associate degree and experience in the medical field with state board exam and licensing requirements clearance. A BSN requires an associate’s degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in any other field non-related to nursing.

BSN degree holders are likely to get paid more than RNs. A BSN degree is also required to grow in the nursing field as it qualifies you for certain positions that RNs do not qualify for.

What is a Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing?

A master’s degree of science in nursing or an MSN allows RNs or BSN graduates to grow in their careers as it offers specialization and skill development in various areas through rigorous practice and theory.  This may take between 1-2 years to complete and allow part-time studies or attend the first year as an introductory course to general nursing.

RN to MSN Degree Program

An MSN degree allows students to work as RNs or educators and is required for many administrative nursing positions. In addition, it directs you in the path of career advancement by providing several advanced practice registered nurse certifications.

A BSN is not necessarily required to attend MSN programs; however, usually, BSN holders pursue MSN degrees. Students can pursue MSN with nursing backgrounds and bachelor’s degrees in different fields. MSN graduate nurses easily qualify for management and leadership roles in the healthcare industry.
