LED lights are relatively a recent technology as compared to the other types of automotive lights. However, these lights have found their place in various industries. When it comes to Car Lights in Melbourne by iilumo, LED headlights, taillights, and turn indicators are the most preferred for both domestic and commercial vehicles.

Initially, these lights were associated with luxury cars, their use is spreading rapidly. Over the years, most cars are manufactured LED-equipped. Multifacet benefits of LED lights have led to their popularity and growing demand. However, it still faces competition from other types of automotive lights.

Let us explore a bit more about automotive headlights, their importance, types, and reasons for the dominance of LED.

  • Importance of headlights

The importance of headlights is obvious, they light up your path and things on it for a safer driving experience. While its basic use is a no-brainer, many are unaware of the importance of its minute details.

Because nearly 40% of the traffic hits the road in the dark, it is crucial to understand the minor details and get the best headlights.

Several factors contribute to determining the best light for your vehicle. To begin with, brightness is the most common factor. Another factor is the color or the temperature of the light. If you prefer cooler lights, go for a more blue hue and pick more red and yellowish for warmer lights.

Another factor is the throw of the light i.e. the distance the light travels from the headlight. Many cars have automatic throw adjustment that increases the throw when you drive faster to give you ample time to react.

  • Types of car headlights

Three types of headlights are used in automotive viz. halogen, high-intensity discharge, and LED lights. With halogen being the oldest and most common and LED is the latest and fastest-growing.

  • Halogen lights

These are the oldest type of headlights that are similar to incandescents in working. These lights have a filament that lits up when an electric discharge is passed through them. The halogen gas in the bulb amplifies the illumination.

These classic lights are cheap but have lower durability with a lifespan of 1000 hours only. A major amount of energy is wasted in the form of heat which reduces the efficiency of halogen lights.

These lights are so bright that often cause temporary blindness to other drivers on the road. Also, these lights tend to become less bright and inefficient with time.

  • High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights

HID lights solve the efficiency issue of halogen light. These lights do not have any filament and the electric charge is passed directly through xenon gas. The result is an extremely bright light with enhanced efficiency. While there is a significant efficiency boost, HID lights have some serious disadvantages.

Similar to halogen these lights also cause temporary blindness. Objects that are outside the beam are pushed into deep shadow and become hardly visible. Their light is also not effective on foggy days.

  • LED lights

Beating all the technical drawbacks of precious types, LED lights are cooler, more efficient, and do not impair the vision of the drivers on the other side of the road. These are long-lasting and offer a lifetime of nearly 15000 hours.

A broad range of options in LED allows you to choose the most suited one. With time, manufacturers have slashed the cost significantly making them more affordable.
