Is the Vasectomy Cost Worth Paying?

A vasectomy does not influence a man’s testosterone levels, erections, climaxes, or sex drive, and is ninety-nine percent successful as birth control. After “the snip”, the patient will still be able to ejaculate, but his semen will be devoid of sperm. Sperm production continues, but it is reabsorbed by the body. It’s a quick treatment that can be done under local, mild, or general anesthesia in 20-40 minutes. It is not only cheaper but also faster, safer and more reliable than female sterilization.

Costs Involved

The cost of a vasectomy can vary widely from free to hundreds of dollars as it depends on where you have it done as well as whether you have insurance. The procedure can be performed in a doctor’s office, at a clinic, or in an outpatient surgical facility. There are two options available: the incision method and the no-scalpel method. In most cases, there is little or no difference between the vasectomy cost of these two procedures. This is a personal choice but the no-scalpel/no-needle/keyhole vasectomy is promoted as being the safer, faster and less painful experience. The recovery time is rapid with fewer risks of infection and complications.

Ask for a Discount

You are within your rights to ask for a cash discount and some institutions offer a sliding scale fee depending on your income. Make sure you ask all the right questions. Most insurance policies will cover a portion, if not all, of the cost of a vasectomy. Remember that the cost of a reversal is very expensive and not always successful.

Cheaper than the Female Option

The male vasectomy is five to six times cheaper than what is charged for female sterilization. The risk of complications or even death is much higher with the female procedure. Long-term, this is the most cost-effective form of birth control if you add up the price of oral contraceptives or condoms over a lengthy time period. The side effects and risks involved with oral contraceptives can also have cost implications.

It is quite obvious that, if you are considering the costs of birth control from all angles, the male vasectomy is well worth it both monetary and risk-related terms.
