Not many people know the function of a calibration gas cylinder, as it seems to be a very technical concept.   • When used to calibrate a piece of equipment, these gases will ensure a very accurate reading, which is why they are the preferred source of calibration compared to other means, especially when dealing with a potentially important instrument such as a gas analyzer or a detector.

Gas calibration standards of learning about:

  • Primary reference gas mixture (PRGM): The PRGM is the highest known standard for the gases to be used commercially as they are often produced in direct comparison to the PSM (Primary Standard Material), and hence the uncertainties are often as low as possible.
  • Secondary reference gas mixture (SRGM): These are not as accurate and as high-quality reference gases in terms of the standard, as they are prepared using the gravimetric technique by keeping the PRGM as the reference point and hence the analytical uncertainties and values are present on the certificate. The SRGM is often used extensively in industries and for calibration because it can balance out the low uncertainties and be extremely cost-efficient.
