What Is Distilled Water?
Distilled water is different from other types of water in that it’s been boiled into vapor and condensed back into a liquid. As such, it doesn’t contain any impurities such as minerals.
Not only that, but it’s free of biological contaminants such as bacteria and viruses. Understand the difference?
Reasons to Distill Water
Distilled water is a good option if you suspect that the water supply is contaminated—you won’t have to worry about ingesting any potential impurities.
It can also help prevent kidney stones and other mineral-like buildups in the body.
How to Make Distilled Water At Home
Distilled water can be found in stores. However, it can be expensive. For this reason, many people choose to make their own at home. Here’s a short guide on how you can do it.
Things You’ll Need
- A stainless steel pot with a lid
- A heat-resistant glass bowl
- A baking rack
- Tap water
- Ice
Step 1
Place the baking rack on the bottom of the stainless steel pot. Add tap water so that it’s half full. Carefully place the glass bowl inside the pot—it should float in the water.
Note: The bottom of the bowl shouldn’t be touching the pot due to the baking rack.
Step 2
Place the pot lid upside down on top of the pot and cover it with ice.
Bring the water to a boil and let it boil for 30-45 minutes, making sure to replace the ice as necessary. As the water boils, it will turn into steam. It will then hit the cold lid and cool back down into a liquid—that’s your distilled water.
Step 3
Turn off the stove. Take the lid off the pot before removing the glass bowl. Be careful as it’ll be very hot. Allow the distilled water to cool down before storing it away in a glass container.
