The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins

The first part of the trilogy by the American writer was released in 2008 and immediately became a bestseller. The action takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where after a global catastrophe in former North America, the dystopian state of Panem was formed. The state’s wealthy capital hosts an annual entertainment tournament, the Hunger Games.

The rules of the game are simple: each district (region of the country) is represented by two young people (a boy and a girl) aged 12 to 18. They become tributes – players of a reality show where one’s prize is survival. The event is held in the arena, where every step of the tributes is monitored by numerous video cameras, and the games are broadcasted throughout the country.

The main character, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, becomes a volunteer participant in the games. She joins the fight for life with another player from District 12, Peeta Mellark. The plot attracts not only with the dangers of the games themselves, but charismatic characters and a love triangle as well.

The adventures of the main characters are so exciting that one can easily forget not only about household duties, but school homework as well. To avoid illness, all 18-year-olds go through a procedure – a process of getting rid of memories, which carry the germs of this disease.

Lina is a young girl who is about to get the procedure done. However, she meets someone who changes her point of view. Trying to defend her beliefs and values, she is forced to flee from a hostile environment and fight for what matters most.

Divergent, by Veronica Roth

In a world built on the ruins of the former Chicago, people have formed five factions – some kinds of closed groups: Candor, Erudite, Amity, Dauntless, Abnegation. Each faction fulfills its function in society, and all of its members share a common set of character traits. 

The main character of the book, Beatrice Prior, grew up in the Abnegation faction, but has always admired the Dauntless, dreaming of joining them. Before the selection ceremony, her test shows an undefined result: she can join three factions at once, since she is a Divergent, a person with multiple inclinations. However, the government is afraid of the Divergents, so Trice is forced to hide her result.

At the selection ceremony, Beatrice decides to join Dauntless. She ends up in a training camp, where she begins to fight her fears. Beatrice also discovers that there are other Divergents, so will they continue hiding or will they start fighting the system? Read the book to find out.
