Almost everyone loves an underdog story: they’re popular in movies, they happen a lot in books and when an underdog story seems to come to live in sports, the underdog always gets a ton of support as well. In this blog, we’ll write about three underdog stories that happened in sports as we’ll explain why these underdog stories are so special.

  1. Leicester City becoming Premier League champions

Leicester City managed the to shock the world when they became Premier League champions in the 2015-16 season. This was very special, because Leicester was originally seen as a contender for relegation. Their squad seemed okay, but had no players that seemed to be world class. With Ranieri as a coach, they didn’t have a coach that could make a surprise happen. At least, that’s what everybody thought. The world turned out to be wrong, as Leicester City became champions. Stars such as N’GoloKanté, RiyahMahrez and Jamie Vardy stood up, as Ranieri made a name for himself too. Leicester didn’t just win the league because of luck: they played the best football of the league that season. Ever since, Leicester are a steady Premier League team, who aren’t seen as Premier League contenders, but can push for European football annually.

  1. Emma Raducanu winning the US Open

As soon as the tennis season starts, people make their lists of who will win what. A name that was on nobody’s list, was Emma Raducanu. However, she managed to create a big upset, when she won the US Open in 2021, when she was only 18 years old. Raducanu was originally seen as a talent, but nobody expected her to get far into the tournament. The way she won was even more impressive, as she didn’t lose a single set throughout the entire tournament. The US Open was only Raducanu’s fourth grand slam tournament: a bright future seems to be ahead of her.

  1. Jenson Button wins the Formula 1

Currently, the Formula 1 world knows two contenders: Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Two drivers that both have their stronger points and their weaker points. Stuff like this has always been the case, as there are always favourites for the Formula 1 season. One driver that completely wasn’t seen as a favourite, was Jenson Button in 2008. However, his car simply seemed to be the quickest out of them all. His partnership with Rubens Barichello lead Jenson Button to a Formula 1 win not many people will forget, as it was a win that came completely out of the blue. Sadly, this wasn’t the first step to more success, as it was the only big win Jenson Button has had in his career.
